My grandmother, Margaret Stieb, was born in Goebel, Russia. I don't have the exact birth date, but it's probably in the 1880s. She married Peter Merkel (also from Goebel). They emmigrated to the United States before World War I. They first settled in Topeka, Kansas, where my grandfather worked for the railroad. The family moved to Chicago after the war. My grandparents had ten children. Most of my Merkel aunts and uncles are dead, but my father and one aunt are alive. They still live in the Chicago area, as do most of my many cousins.
